How Important is Praying as a Teenager?

Many things revolve around being a teenager, and it is quite easy to channel your energy into other things and lay prayers to rest. Talk about academics, peers, misplaced emotions, settling nags with parents, and even social media. I have met teenagers who tell me they want to enjoy life as much as they can, because according to them, there are a lot of things they won’t be able to do later on as adults. So, why not ‘enjoy’ life now?

Building my prayer life is one very beautiful decision I’m glad I made as a teenager. Did I enjoy life? Yes. Funnily, what these teenagers actually call ‘enjoyment’ are not exactly the enjoyment they paint it as. Who says prayer is boring? Who says building your spirit man is a waste of time? I can assure you that whoever says so certainly do not know about these things; he probably knows them on the surface.

Fine, we have things to take care of and deal with, but you can never know how much power you wield as a praying teenager, except you launch into it.

This isn’t just about praying for a new pair of shoes, or favour in the sight of your teacher. Don’t get me wrong, you can pray about just anything, but there is a deeper realm you have to step into. Your prayer life should exceed that.

1Corinthians 16:11 Seek the lord and his strength, seek his face continually

1Thess 5:17 Pray without ceasing

The term ‘continually’ or ‘without ceasing’ doesn’t specify ‘who’ should do the praying. A mere infant? A teenager who has a lot of enjoying to do? An adult?

Once you believe and trust God, let prayer be a continuous pill you never want to recover from.

Ephesians 6: 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

You pray, not only for yourself, but for those around you. That’s what we do for those we love, and because we are taught to love (Luke 6:27), we do it without bias.

Your prayers will go a long way, and never should you think you can do little. You can actually do more! I haven’t read anywhere in the bible where it was recorded that there should be a limit to our prayers, or it should be according to our ages.

Stretch your arms; break your limits; take out the borders; pray!
