3 Steps to Living your Dreams

Have you ever wondered what exactly it means to live your dreams? Especially if you’ve heard a number of older persons say this overtime? Perhaps living your dreams isn’t as complicated as some people paint it as? Well, if you’re curious, keep reading to know three key things to help you live your dreams.

1. Know and get sincere about what you want

The very act of taking time to decide what you really want in life can change your life completely. No one gets what he wants until he knows what he wants.

Most of us honestly do not know what we want. Even after we finish high school, get into graduate school, graduate, make money and build a family. All we know is, we’re existing and all is going on well. But somewhere within us, we know that we are not really living / fulfilled.

Raymond wish to become a judge when he grows up. He completes high school and applies for admission into the university, but was not accepted. He tries the second time but was given some other course. Again, he tries for the third time, but was given some related course. Here, he gives up and accepts it. He makes good grades, graduates, makes money and builds a family. All is just OK. But, he now lives with the consciousness that he simply exists.

Truth is, there’s more hope for Raymond than a man who has no clue to what he wants. Raymond knew what he wanted, all he lacked was passion.

  • What will you enjoy doing with the time you have on earth?
  • Do you even have a passion for something? A passion so deep that it has the ability to make you forget about meals, sleep and time with friends?
  • What moves you? What problem do you encounter that makes you never want to leave the scene until the problem is solved?
  • Who is that person you want to grow into that you are willing to undermine how many times you have to try until you become that person?
  • What single thing do you want your name to be synonymous with when you’re no more?
  • If you were told that you had one year to live, how and where would you want to spend it?

You see, the answers to these questions and more are pointers to what you want in life.

I am not going to mention what you’re good at. I’m not even going to tell you that what you’re good at is what you were placed on the earth to solve. It goes beyond that.

Passion supersedes what you’re good at. I’d rather stick to passion and focus instead.

Our challenge is not that we lack a list of successes recorded, our main challenge is that we do not know what we want; something worth breaking bones for.

2. Discipline

Leaders aren’t born; they are made. And are made just like anything else, through hard work and that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve any goal. ~Vince Lombard.

It is better to control yourself than win a thousand battle. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you. Not by angels or demons, heaven or hell. ~Buddha

Often times, we’ve heard or come across books where the author talks about discipline being the bridge between our goals and accomplishments. Right?

Discipline is defined as the correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement (Merrian Webster)

After deciding/knowing what your dream is, make a list of everything you can think of that could possibly lead you to achieving your dream. Thereafter, discipline your body to work towards them.

Discipline is real from within, it has no problem being an abstract; our body is where the challenge lies. It thus has to be placed under subjection.

After deciding what you want, you might discover that you lack all the ability to achieve it. But it’s fine. For what anyone lacks in natural ability, he/she can get greater at it above those who have those abilities naturally, through discipline; at all times, practice. Keep practicing. Stars are not born anywhere, there are created by hard/smart work and practice; which all boils down to discipline.

Benjamin Carson, a renowned Neurosurgoen whom we know was not born with the natural ability to be great in the sciences. He literally wasn’t good at anything (academics), not until discipline came to play. Thank God for his mother, Sonya Carson.

Start small. Beware of being in a hurry to become great at what you’ve discovered. Write down goals that are attainable. Take them seriously. Give yourself some credit when you achieve a goal.

3. Company

Who do you surround yourself with? Who do you allow into your circle? What are they even made of? Ask yourself these vital questions:

  • How do they plan and spend their hours daily?
  • How do they dress and carry themselves?
  • What do they place as priority?
  • How do they speak and treat others?
  • Do they ask questions about your dreams and goals?
  • Do they even share same vision with you?
  • Do they challenge you into doing more?
  • Do you have mentors who have achieved all you dream of achieving?

On this note, I’ll conclude by saying:

You do not need too many people in your life. All you need is a few but similar minded individuals like you.
