How Teenagers Can Prevent Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in United states. There are risk factors for heart disease, which includes:

  • Age: research says people above the age of 45years are at risk of having a heart disease
  • Gender: women have a greater chance of suffering from heart disease.
  • Family history: heart disease can be hereditary.

Heart disease in teenagers/adolescents is not a rare situation, and it does not mean it is congenital. I have seen cases of teenagers who suffer heart disease, without anyone in their family having heart disease.

Risk Factors of Having a Heart Disease in Teenagehood

  • Obesity: A research result says 49% of overweight teens and 61% have one or more heart disease risk factors.
  • Children born with congenital heart disease
  • An example of congenital heart disease is a hole in the heart or heart deformity.
  • Smoking
  • Traumatic experience

I mentioned that I have seen cases of teenagers with heart disease, a large number of them did not suffer any congenital heart disease or deformity. An accident happened and it affected how the heart works.

Daily Habits to Prevent Heart Disease

In preventing any kind of disease, you have to first understand how it works, causes and see those it has affected around you.

Young folks know the heart as the place where love abides, but the heart does more than just love. The human heart helps in the pumping and circulation of blood around your body.

On the heart are tube-like structures called the arteries and veins, and their main assignment is to take blood that contains oxygen out of the heart and other parts of the body and bring back blood without oxygen from the parts of the body.

Heart disease usually occurs when there is a certain deformity in the way the heart works.

For example, the reason an obese teenager is at risk of heart disease is that too much cholesterol can clog one of the arteries. Having understood the above, you need to do the following to prevent heart disease.

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

Your food does not just quench your hunger, it helps your growth and body. Avoid junks, a lot of them contain a large amount of cholesterol. Eat grains and fibres. Eat at least 4 eggs every week. Reduce fats.

2. Regular Exercise

Exercise improves your mind and keeps you refreshed. With regular exercise, you can manage your weight effectively.

3. Manage Stress

Stress is one of the risk factors for a lot of diseases, and heart disease is one.

4. Sleep Well

When you don’t sleep, your body fails to be at rest. Your brain keeps providing energy for your body.

5. Keep your Cholesterol Level Under Control

Cholesterol can block the arteries, and this puts you at risk of coronary artery disease and heart attack.

6. Avoid smoking

7. Avoid Drugs that can Increase your Blood Pressure

Certain drugs can affect the blood pressure, without you knowing. Be sure of any drug you are using. Ask your healthcare provider to teach you.

In summary, heart disease is gradually becoming one of the non-communicable diseases, which is life-threatening if not treated early. The above are things to do daily to prevent heart disease. Albeit, when you notice any symptom, severe headache, lack of sleep, dizziness, sudden chest pain, it is advised to visit your health care provider.

A heart disease is not a hopeless circumstance, with quality health rendered it can be properly treated.
