ImpactHer & TMO: Bridging Digital Gaps for Young Entrepreneurs | TMO Academy

Between September 29 and October 31, 2025, Teens Meet Outreach (TMO) partnered with ImpactHer to deliver a free month-long digital skills programme designed to help African female entrepreneurs strengthen their online presence and improve the way they run their businesses in a digital economy. This aligns with our TMO Academy project, which aims to equip teenagers with both digital and traditional skills.

This project brought together over 100 participants from across Nigeria, Uganda, and Ghana, forming a diverse learning community of entrepreneurs, students, and young business owners eager to strengthen their digital skills and position their ventures for growth. Participants who completed the sessions in full were awarded certificates of participation.

The training was held virtually and spread across 12 structured sessions, with each meeting building on the last. The goal was simple: to help participants understand how digital tools work and how to use them effectively to build visibility, attract customers, and improve daily business operations.

Why This Project Mattered

For many of the participants, digital tools were familiar but underutilised. Some had business pages online but didn’t know how to optimise them. Others had heard of Google Ads or analytics but never felt confident enough to use them.

The Stand Up Digitally, Stand Out Globally programme was created to bridge this gap by giving practical, step-by-step guidance delivered in a way that felt accessible, interactive, and relatable to everyday business challenges.

How the Training Was Structured

The curriculum was designed by ImpactHer’s digital learning team, covering a wide range of essential digital topics. Across the 12 sessions, participants explored topics such as:

  • Building a credible and recognisable online brand
  • Setting up digital sales channels
  • Creating an effective digital marketing plan
  • Utilising Google Business Profile
  • Analysing data and insights
  • Understanding Google Ads
  • …and many other relevant subjects.

Participant Experiences and Testimonials

One thing that stood out throughout the programme was the enthusiasm of attendees. Even with the challenges of network fluctuations and varying time zones, many participants remained consistent and active in each class.

Here are some recurring themes from the feedback shared by participants:

“Well, I have always been skeptical about applying ads, but now I can use this tool with complete confidence.”

— Kingsley Metuge

One participant shared a more detailed reflection on her experience during the programme:

“As a participant in the showcaseHer Cohort Three, I was immediately drawn to the ImpactHer Digital Business Skills Training. Recognizing that the majority of my customer base operates online, I saw this as an invaluable opportunity to deepen my understanding of digital strategies.

The program has, without a doubt, surpassed my expectations. While my initial goal was to learn how to better utilize social media platforms for customer interaction and attraction, I gained so much more. For instance, I was aware of Google Ads but lacked the practical knowledge to implement them effectively. This training demystified the process, showing me that successful ad campaigns are achievable without needing to outsource. It’s truly inspiring to now understand how to elevate KICKSPLUG’s online presence and stand out in the digital landscape, a challenge I previously observed in other companies with curiosity.

Moreover, I had the privilege of re-attending ImpactHer’s bookkeeping training, a decision that proved incredibly beneficial. The second immersion enabled me to solidify my understanding of financial management, particularly in budgeting. Despite my proficiency with numbers, the insights gained into strategic business budgeting were groundbreaking. The provision of a free financial template was an exceptionally practical bonus.

My sincere gratitude goes to ImpactHer and TMO for providing such comprehensive and empowering training. It has equipped me with essential digital and financial skills that will undoubtedly fuel KICKSPLUG’s growth.”

— Dinah Cyrus

Another participant noted:

“I really enjoyed learning from trainers outside of South Africa and appreciate their knowledge, skill, and professionalism.”

— Faieza Sanders

Other participants also shared that they loved the practical sessions and appreciated how interactive the classes were, noting that they were able to voice their opinions and ask questions freely. Some mentioned that the course was easy to follow, which helped them better grasp what was taught, while others highlighted that the trainers were friendly, supportive, and approachable throughout the programme.

Challenges Noted

As with many virtual programmes, there were areas that participants asked us to improve. Some participants experienced network issues during sessions, while a few requested clearer guidance on registration and attendance processes.

Because the sessions were not recorded, participants who faced network challenges were unable to revisit the lessons for better understanding. A small number of participants also noted background noise during one of the classes.

We have documented these concerns and will be addressing them as we plan for future programmes, particularly for participants joining from regions with unstable internet access.

The Impact of the Programme

Beyond the knowledge shared, this programme created fresh momentum for entrepreneurs across three countries. Many participants began updating their business pages immediately after the sessions. Others started implementing new systems, building marketing plans, and making clearer strategic decisions. It was exciting to see participants not only learning but applying the lessons in real time.

Appreciation

This project was coordinated by two dedicated TMO Volunteers, Christabel Atole and Oluwatofunmi Kolawole, who drafted the project plans, liaised with our correspondent at ImpactHer, and diligently saw the project through to completion. We deeply appreciate their commitment and hard work.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to ImpactHer for partnering with us and facilitating this programme. Special thanks to Emmanuel Ime, our direct correspondent from the organization, whose patience, professionalism, and support were invaluable throughout the entire process.

Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to the facilitators who led the sessions and ensured participants were engaged and satisfied, even in the face of challenges:
