Music is a part of us, it is how we pour out our feelings, expressed in songs and can either be danced to or not.
According to Wikipedia, “Music is found in every known culture, past and present, varying widely between times and places. Since all people of the world, including the most isolated tribal groups, have a form of music, it may be concluded that music is likely to have been present in the ancestral population prior to the dispersal of humans around the world. Consequently, music may have been in existence for at least 55,000 years and the first music may have been invented in Africa and then evolved to become a fundamental constituent of human life.
A culture’s music is influenced by all other aspects of that culture, including social and economic organization and experience, climate, and access to technology. The emotions and ideas that music expresses, the situations in which music is played and listened to, and the attitudes toward music players and composers all vary between regions and periods. “Music history” is the distinct subfield of musicology and history which studies music (particularly Western art music) from a chronological perspective.”
Music is as old as man, we quite know of how the people in the days of Noah celebrated weddings and had music played. There is more to music than we all know.
Music is spiritual, magical, emotional, it has healing powers- it is a therapy on it’s own.
Focusing on the healing part of music, we get healed or sometimes broken hearted when we listen to certain songs.
The truth is, music is food to our soul. It feeds our mind, that’s why the moment you know the lyrics of a particular song you picture each word and your mind automatically reminisce on them.
King Saul, who is our case study, was invoked with an evil spirit and he needed to be healed. There was just one medicine to be used on him as at then- David’s harp. Studying the Bible, I understood that the moment David laid his hands on the musical instrument, he became fine.
That shows that music is both spiritual and medicinal.
I am not a fan of loud music, I love cool songs and that’s the reason I love Paul Wilbur’s songs for my worship. Every singer is great, I love the way he sings; they may sound boring to you. There were times when I felt down and the only thing that could soothe my heart were his songs.
Music therapy has a great influence on the listener. It heals the heart, touches the soul and teaches the mind.

Music speaks the language your heart understands
Have you ever been in dilemma and you listen a particular song and all you can hear is the lyrics addressing your current situation?
There are different genres of music and various artists likewise. Each of these artists have a music genre they are known for.
Mike Abdul is known for his fuji style, yet they are gospel songs. Various hymns we sing in church today are classical.

Restores or increases faith
There were days where I had to listen a particular song all over again, they were the kind of words I needed at the time.
For example, Jerry K’s song- you are the air I breathe
When I heard this song, I kept repeating it, I realized there was nothing for me to worry about in life.
“You are my peace in the midst of the storm”
“You are the air I breathe”
If he is definitely the air I breathe, it means no sickness can take away my life.
If he is my peace in the midst of the storm then my boat can’t sink like Titanic.

Music helps us draw closer to God.
It convicts, it encourages, it counsel, it rebuke the listener.
-
Reduces anxiety
Music brings life to a sick soul, it puts smile on a saddened face.

It allows you speak from your inner self
The psalmist understood the meaning of music, not just as a song but also to heal the soul. The psalmist expressed himself well in his songs and with instruments.
Healing from music depends solely on the kind of songs you listen to, just as I earlier mentioned that we have various types of music. To make things easier, music is now differentiated into two part: the secular and the Gospel.
Gospel telling us about Christ: his life, death and resurrection, and secular singing about anything outside God.
The kind of music you listen to determines your healing.
If you’re teenager and a victim of what I’ll term “bad love” and want to get healed through music, you should know that songs that contain sexual contents or preaches “love is all about sex” as the only message should be avoided. Rather than healing, it poisons the soul.
How powerful music is, it alters the mind. Back then in Nigeria when our parents and grandparents only listened to Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, Orlando Owo and the likes, you would see that these people patterned their lifestyle to these songs, they spoke of wisdom, parables using their local dialect.
Likewise also Late Anikulapo Fela Kuti, these people are called legends simply because people in their generation felt their songs heal their wounds.
The point now is what kind of music do you listen to?
How can those songs help you?
If you can be sincere to find answers to these questions. I don’t think healing through music would not be possible.
Much love!
