What makes a woman?
Sex? Fame? Wealth? Love? Her body? Her spouse?
Whatever makes a woman proud of herself is definitely something that makes her happy. Have you ever noticed your mother smiling one beautiful morning in an unusual way when your father just returned from a trip?
Whatever comes into your mind when you see her glow is either true or false.
Layo is 25years and she is not as religious as she showcased to people around her, but most people believed she was so religious. As usual she always stayed indoor and hardly went out as my other roommates. I returned from class one afternoon and found her crying. At first I thought she was praying, since her vocal cords were mixed with her sniffs and coughs. I ignored and laid on my bed gently; I hated to disturb people praying.
I heard her sniff louder, she had raised her head up from her bed side. I stared at her blood shot eyes and wondered what could make Layo pray this hard.
“Layo, what is wrong with you?” I asked.
She shook her head, it was obvious she wanted me to believe that all was well with her. I moved closer and held her hands.
“Why are you crying?” I probed further and wiped her tears with my palm.
“Nothing” she finally spoke a word in a low tone.
“Hmm… Okay. What of Jude? Are you not supposed to visit him?” I decided to mention her fiance’s name to change the subject.
“We…” she stuttered, “broke up this morning” she completed her statement, picked her phone and checked the new notifications on it.
I wanted to ask if the break up was the reason she tried to cry her eyes out, but I decided to change the topic to something better.
“I thought you said you wanted to visit the hospital for routine check up today? How did it go?” her demeanor sent a message that she was uncomfortable with my questions
“That was the reason we broke up” she replied. “I hope I can trust you?” our eyeballs met.
“I have never been aroused before” she said. I nodded my head as though I understood her, “Jude has always complained about me. Like, I am not sensitive to any man’s touch at all” she paused and smirked.
“I tried to ask questions from some people, some said it is an hormonal imbalance, I even used some drugs. Jude decided to take me to a hospital and after everything, the doctor said I am like this because I was circumcised at childhood” she explained and sighed afterwards.
“Like this?” I tried to understand. “Wait oo, you mean your inability to get aroused was because of the circumcision abi?” I placed her head on my lap and muttered prayers that something will be possible concerning her.
Female genitalia mutilation is also known as female genitalia cutting and circumcision. It is a ritual that is commonly practiced in Africa and Asia, done by the cutting or removal of the clitoral hood, clitoral gland, inner labia or all of the external female genitalia.
Key Facts about FGM from World Health Organization:
- FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15
- FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women
- More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries in Africa, the middle East and Asia where FGM is concentrated
Procedures usually differ according to country and ethnic group, which is why there are different types of FGM.
Type 1 is the partial or total removal of the clitoris (the clits is a sensitive part of the female genital organ).
Type 2 is the partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minor (this is a part of the external genitalia, the lip-like structure).
Type 3 is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora and it is sometimes done through stitching.
Type 4 includes all the harmful procedures which includes pricking, piercing, scrapping and cauterization.
The practice was initiated to control women’s sexuality. Overtime, FGM has caused many women so much. Rather than it having a health benefit, it has complications which are either long term or short term.
Effects of FGM on women
- It causes infections (it can cause tetanus infections and HIV/AIDS can be transmitted since it is done in an unhygienic way).
- Difficulty urinating and passing of menstrual flow
- Chronic pain
- Inability to get pregnant
- Complications during childbirth
- Formation of scars or keloids
- It can cause damage to the nerves around the clitoris
- Pain during sex
Women may suffer from anxiety and depression. They may also feel ashamed and betrayed. (this happens if FGM was done when the child was knowledgeable of events).
FGM has done more evil than good to the female gender. 1 out of 7 were successful. You can save an unborn girl child or an uncircumcised girl child from this ritual.
