University College Hospital – Ibadan, Nigeria | LPOH 9.0 Project

On August 23, 2025, volunteers from TMO Ibadan set out to leave a lasting impression on the hearts of discouraged in-patient relatives at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

With the increasing cost of living and healthcare, public tertiary hospitals like UCH have now become a last resort for gravely ill patients who cannot afford other alternatives. The caretakers of these patients are often under immense financial stress while funding the treatment and navigating the logistics of their loved one’s admission, while the patient remains the centre of care and attention.

The outreach aimed to encourage and comfort the caretaker relatives by presenting them with packages containing snacks, soft drinks, beverages, and a heartwarming card message.

The first member of the TMO team arrived at the hospital at 9:54 a.m. The day began with transporting, packaging, and arranging the gift items before proceeding into the hospital complex.

We met patients’ relatives outside the wards, where many were visibly tired and dozing off while keeping vigil. Faith, Temitope, Miracle, Oluwatomi, and Better took time to introduce TMO to them and ask about their experience as in-patient caretakers.

We shared words of encouragement with the caretakers outside twelve wards on four floors, reaching fifty-seven (57) people in total. We were warmly received by every beneficiary we approached. Some relatives even shared personal stories about the challenges of caring for their loved ones in the hospital setting.

Many conversations ended in hugs as we handed over the packages with a reminder to not neglect their well-being while caring for their loved ones.

In the words of one beneficiary ,“You have indeed left a love-shaped print on my heart today.” Others shared that the packages and encouraging words had lifted their spirits. The outreach ended at 11:52am as we exited the hospital complex for a session of goofy pictures.

LPOH is special because the outreach affords us the opportunity to reach out to demographics we have identified during our day-to-day lives. Ibadan’s LPOH 2025 was special because it was an unconventional attempt to appreciate the unappreciated. The prints weren’t only for the hearts of our beneficiaries, they were on ours as well.
