Music Monday: Pressure

If you are like me, you have a couple of songs on your phone that you totally relate to. In a bid to connect to these songs, I tend to overplay them. Yes, I’m that person.

On Sunday, I had a very long yet enlightening conversation with one of my best friends. The conversation started out with the usual hello and hi and Before we knew it we were knee deep in talks about how society coupled with culture creates unnecessary _______ (can’t figure out the word). We allow the world we live in influence us unnecessarily. I said “us” because I am included.

Quick example, growing up in a preachers house, I was subject to live my life in certain ways so I do not tarnish my father’s image. This way of life is necessarily bad but then as you can imagine, it put unnecessary pressures on an individual. If you think I’m lying, look out for your pastor’s child.

Of course, pastors children and, most especially, believers need to live a certain lifestyle distinct from the people of the world but we are gradually becoming like the Pharisees adding extra weights that the good Lord did not intend for us to carry. Unfortunately, people are losing almost everything to this pressure. Some even lose their sanity.

Jonathan McReynolds’ pressure has a relatable lyrics that could bring tears to your eyes (it did mine).

I, I can’t even turn on my phone
Without being reminded of the lie
That I am alone and broken, unsuccessful

I, I can’t always talk to my friends
‘Cause they’ve got expectations
That I may or may not be living up to

I really need to rid myself
Of the pressure, pressure, pressure
To be someone else that the world has made

Jesus take from me
All the pressure, pressure, pressure
To be someone that you did not create
Help me be me
And only see you
Let me decrease
And glorify you

I, I thought my intentions were good
Just act like a Christian should
And hope someone watching would approve
And be inspired
But you’re not feeling my show

Then how far could I go
Before all of my accomplishment
Go down in fire

Just cause of
Of the pressure, pressure, pressure
To be someone else that the church has made

Jesus take from me
All the pressure, pressure, pressure
To be someone that you did not create
I just wanna live
I just wanna live for you
Nobody else, but you

See, our goal in life is to be like Christ. If the pressure in your life is not pushing you to the cross then honey, you need to let it go.

My prayer for you this week is that no matter what happens you’ll stay strong in the face of pressure and that with God’s help you’ll not succumb.

Until next week!
