My Object of Motivation

Motivation is the drive or energy to make a thing happen. Motivation could be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is a drive that comes from within you and they are things that give you personal reward. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is an external drive. Just like its name, extrinsic motivation is a drive that comes from external factors such as rewards, promotions, and gifts.

We strive every day with dreams and goals we wish to accomplish. Do you ever get to a point in the pursuit of your dreams and you feel discouraged and lack the zeal to keep making effort? Or you never fulfill any of your plans in life? Are you a person who’s only perfect at making plans but never actually accomplish your set objectives? Then you might have a problem with motivation.

As you have a goal, dream, purpose, and vision in life, you should and must have your motivations. What you will achieve in life has a thing to do with your inner self, a drive from within.

Taking schooling, for example, you attend school in order to become a professional in your field of study, to gain recognition, to make money, to travel here and there, to meet people, to make an impact somewhere, etc. All of these reasons are motivating factors or objects. Anytime you think about them, there’s a drive that arises from within you. They are like fuel that keeps an engine running. Motivation is like an energy that propels you to action.

Knowing what drives you is a step closer to your dream. Whatever your goal is, you must be aware of the incentives that move you to follow through on getting it done.

If you are trying to pass an examination, how would you get motivated to get it done? Do you focus on how you will feel when you get your result and take necessary actions or you just keep wishing to pass without actions? The actions and steps you take are the work to be done while the result is your object of motivation. The factor or object that motivates you depends on your goals, age and the present condition you are in life. Therefore, your object of motivation differs from someone else. Some individuals get motivated by other people through:

  • Words of encouragement
  • Respect
  • Recognition
  • Gifts and Rewards
  • Money
  • Fame
  • Power
  • Independence
  • Ambition/Results
  • Security
  • Status/Prestige

Irrespective of what you are motivated by, the desire to achieve your defined goals and become better at what you do is the principal thing.

Your driving force is to guide and keep you in line with your goals. It makes you want to do more even when things seem difficult. In times of discomfort and discouragement, these things keep you progressing because anytime you look at your object of motivation, you are subconsciously rewarding yourself.

The question now is: What is your object of motivation? What drives you? What keeps you getting things done?

“Motivation is the electrical power that activates the engine of success.”- Remez Sasson
