Fear is an emotion that almost everyone experiences daily. These fears range from the fear of failure, fear of death, fear of the future and fear of the unknown- that is, having a consistent feeling that something will always go wrong somewhere. Fear, as it is, does not come in form of a giant. It can be in a subtle way as simple as a thought.
However, if you allow fearful thoughts to stay in your mind and overwhelm you, it has the ability to grasp your entire being and be the controller of your life.
Fear can impede a person from attaining his or her goals.
Ways to Overcome Fear
1. Identify the underlying cause of the fear
Fear can be caused by many reasons which differ from one person to another. Some of these fears are real issues while some are borne out of worry.
Whatever may be the cause of the fear, having a knowledge of its cause will enable you to understand all there is about it and the possible ways of solving the problem.‘
Understanding the source of fear is paramount to its eventual dispelling
2. Have a positive outlook to life
Being optimistic is an important way to handle fear. When setting out to do any task, do you have the mentality that you are going to succeed or fail?
You attract what you think
Your background, your present status and the environment you find yourself in may present you no chance of success. However, there are treasures in you waiting to be explored. There are opportunities to succeed around you if only you are willing to rise above your fears and maximize them.
3. Adequate preparation
Inadequate preparation for any activity means setting out for failure, which will lead to subsequent fear of failure. For example, if you are faced with the fear of failing exams, then proper preparation in the place of studying is required.
Inadequate preparation will lead to frustration
After adequate preparation for an exam, a presentation or an interview, the fear will be minimized to the barest level. With consistent efforts, you will overcome the fear.
The major antidote to fear is to Prepare! Prepare!! Prepare!!!
4. Right living
Anyone who does a criminal act is subject to the fear of being caught and the fear of being imprisoned. Being morally upright will save a person from unnecessary fears. As much as fear should not be the motivation for our actions, we should endeavour to live right by engaging in lawful activities, eating healthy food to avoiding being at risk of being obese, careful driving to minimize accidents and so on.
5. Feed your mind with the right content
Read books and listen to messages that will boost your confidence. The mind is like a field. Endeavour to plant the right seeds by reading books and listening to what will increase your faith. Avoid fear-inducing materials.
Importantly, meditating on the Word of God will increase your faith and give you victory over fear.
6. Talk to someone
‘A problem shared is half solved.’ You may not be able to handle some issues yourself. Talk to someone more knowledgeable about it.
Someone somewhere has gone through what you are going through.
What makes us afraid can sometimes be a mirage and some can be genuine. Whatever it is, speak out. Share it with a trusted friend, a mentor or a counsellor.
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
The lyrics of a hymn says
‘Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer’
God is willing to listen to us. We can tell him our deepest fears. He knows us more than we know ourselves. There is nothing that we want to hide from Him that He does not know. He is the All-knowing God. He wants us to come before Him in the place of prayer and bare out our hearts before Him.
He knows what the future holds for you.
Life is too precious to be forever lived in fear. Do not allow fear to hold you back from becoming who you were made to be. You were made to soar!
