As lights, we need to remain bright and relevant. To build and Sustain our Illumination, we have to intentionally seek out ways to do so.
Here are a few ways to sustain your Illumination:
1. Acknowledge God as the Source of Light
Jesus is the Light of the world. And as God’s representative, you simply reflect his light in your world (sphere of influence). You can’t give what you don’t have. But when you depend on your Source (God), it becomes easy to sustain your Illumination.
2. Stay plugged to the Source
I have a light source for my laptop that only works when it’s plugged into the laptop. If left unplugged, it’s as good as not having one.
Similarly, like lights, the intensity of your illumination depends on how connected you are to your Source.
I’ve already established that Jesus is the Light of the world (‘as long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ John 9:5 KJV). And without him, you can’t shine in this dark world.
Also, a branch cannot bear fruits if it’s cut off from the tree. Therefore, to sustain your illumination, you need to stay plugged into God in consistent fellowship, word study and prayers.
3. Consciously & Actively Let Your Light Shine
We will never know how bright a dark room can be until we turn on the light source.
Similarly, your depressed neighbour may never have reasons to live until you pray for him and take steps to reach out to him.

It’s possible your colleague has given up on love until you learn to show love through little acts of kindness with pure motives.
Look out for ways to shine and dispel the darkness of hatred, depression, racism, immorality, etc. around you.

4. Surround Yourself with Light Boosters
The Bible says iron sharpens iron…(Proverbs 27:17). Blunt irons can’t sharpen each other. There are people and circumstances that encourage you to shine your light. Identify them and surround yourself with such.
Look out for people who give you room to be loving, people who encourage purity, diligence, innovation, etc and build relationships with them.

5. Avoid Light Extinguishers
As long as there are light boosters, there will always be fire extinguishers.
The world is a system that thrives in darkness. Certain billboards, events, movies, songs, etc. are just designed to put off the light of God in you. Some conversations with people won’t allow room for your illumination. Avoid such.
