4 Most Significant Roles of a Leader

Do you know that as a leader, you have some significant roles to play? Leaders are known to take significant roles that can be beneficial to others or organizations. There are many places we can find ourselves leading; be it in school (as a school prefect or an executive), in the church, mosque, or any other formidable organization. We should know that leadership is an act of service.

Before any leader can be influential, such a leader must have some significant roles in which they partake in. Leading in school or any organization as a teenager or youth requires some significant roles which must be consciously observed.

And here are four significant roles of a leader. Sit back and enjoy reading 🤗:

1. Have Vision

This is the first requirement of you as a leader. You must have a vision which you operate with. Visions are guidelines that highlight what you want to achieve. For example, you were appointed as a social perfect or social director in school, you must have a vision showing what you want to achieve. Sometimes, there could have been an already established vision for you to operate with – run with it, and do that effectively.

It is not all about having a vision that makes you a leader but your ability to communicate the vision to other team members or followers. This is your role- a significant one to play. Communicating the vision will ensure clarity of purpose and will give a vivid description of what you are planning to achieve.

Make your vision simple and easy to be remembered. Having a vision statement well-outlined has a way of sticking to the mind of others, thereby having a psychological effect on them.

2. Be a Role Model

As a leader, you are in the spotlight; everyone is seeing you. You are the center of attraction and everything about you is observed. Leadership magnifies us, including our actions and inactions; our strengths and weaknesses.

A role model is someone who sets the pace for others to follow.

A role model is like a mirror people view, mirroring themselves. A role model is someone exemplary – a well-deserving example to imitate. It is your role as a leader to be an effective role model to others.

As a leader and role model, you show a positive attitude like being punctual in school, meetings, or office; you manage anger effectively and all these can be seen and observed by others. Furthermore, as a role model, you are at peace with your followers or team members, you settle disputes among others and you are not a Spark for a negative attitude. Being a leader, your attitude is on watch, and you must ensure that you maintain your positive image.

Being a role model in school, you take your school activities with seriousness. You represent your school effectively. You respect your teachers and students. You are not a bully in school, neither are you a cyber-bully – bullying others on social media.

At the meeting, you are open to new ideas; you are well coordinated in words and action, you contribute to the well-being of the organization. You co-operate with others in achieving success for the organization. You take your responsibility important and you carry them out properly.

3. Delegate Responsibility

Delegating responsibility involves the act of committing and distributing tasks among team members or followers. This is a significant role of a leader. You must be aware of members’ strengths and strategize on how to improve their weaknesses.

You can delegate responsibility in two ways and they are:

Delegating responsibility according to the area of specialization

Here, you are delegating responsibility according to members’ expertise. You are making the right people take roles in the right activities. For example: If Cynthia is an artist, Khalid is a writer and Tobi is a musician, you delegate tasks to them according to their area of expertise.

Delegating responsibility according to strength

Knowing your members’ strengths and weaknesses will help you in delegating tasks effectively. You harness their strength toward achieving the set-up goals. This will enhance productivity.

4. Decision Making

A leader must have the plans figured out and must be strategic in decision-making. Ideas are good when generated, the ability to implement ideas into the decision will make them become reality. A leader is a decision-maker, s/he scrutinizes ideas contributed in the organization. S/he is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the group and also aware of the group’s opportunities and threats.

Decisions are made when the ideas are being analyzed, and the viability of the idea is checked against the social, political, technological, or economic impact. Decision-making needs prudence by the leader and a leader should not be in a hurry to carry out a decision without proper scrutiny of the idea(s).
