Laying the Right Foundation as a Teen

Life is offered to you as a free gift. It is like an open ground where a building should be erected. There are different stages of life; childhood, teenage years and adult life.

As a child, you were being cared for and pampered as a novice on earth by your parents, siblings, friends, and members of the society. Of course, you might have lacked affections as a result of some irreversible occurrence but as a child, someone somewhere has shown you the way to go and how to live.

Coming to teenage years, you have, to a certain extent, the power and right to make life decisions. Though people are there to guide you, choices are made by you irrespective of the guidance you might have received. This is the stage in life where you make decisions that are very crucial for your future. During these years, a majority of us do not understand what life truly means but the choices we make lays the foundation for our future.

Imagine an eighteen-year-old boy detained in prison for a crime he committed ignorantly or a girl at sixteen pregnant. These two people are a product of probably the choices they had made at a point in time and these choices led to the laying of a faulty foundation for their future.

Sometimes, a wrong choice can be amended but most times, they are irreversible. And even when choices are amended, the past is not erasable.

How would a young man at eighteen imprisoned, come out of there and buy back the years he had wasted and the stigma attached to him as an ex-convict? How can a sixteen-year-old girl survive the physical, psychological and social trauma? Or get back the years she had to pause her education and return to her normal life?

This is way too much for a teenager to handle. Trust me, you wouldn’t want to be there. Those that have trodden this path can tell you that it’s not as easy as it seems. Teenage years are serious years, you pay now and play later or you play now and pay later. The former is very much preferable.

There’s no substitute for years that are gone but there’s the present which you can seize to build right.

Building right entails making right choices and to achieve this, always remember Ecclesiastes 12:1 “Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come out, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them”

You can build right with God. All you can have are your dreams, visions, and goals but God has the master plan.

How do you choose to lay the right foundation today?
