There is someone I used to be friends with for years until she travelled out of state and away from where we live to stay somewhere else. After about two years, she returned. And when she did, it was no longer the same friend I used to know. She was totally different. Her dress sense had changed, her attitude and actions were so different from what I used to know. She was a shadow of whom I use to call my friend.
After about six months, to my surprise, she was back to who I used to know. She had adjusted to her former self. Then I was wondering, what had happened? In two years, a person changes seriously and in another few months, another change had occurred again. Then I realized one key thing- Influence.
Influence is the power to affect or manipulate something or someone. It is the ability to change the development of fluctuating things such as conduct, thoughts or decisions.
Influence is so powerful. If you spend just a minute with someone, it could either make you a better person or make you feel worse than you were before meeting them. There is much to what we think our association does to us.
Dr Myles Munroe wrote in a book that you should “spend more time with positive influencers and minor time with negative influencers”. Your association with some people might be harming you rather than blessing you. Those you listen to are the ones you act like. It is, therefore, necessary that you check your influencers- friends and colleagues to be sure that you are heading towards the right place with the right people of like minds. Check the people you move with and listen to. And be sure that you will want your life to be like theirs. If not, then it’s time for a change.
I Corinthians 15:33 Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, if you listen to then you will start acting like them.
You can become a better person when you have good influencers.
How do you choose those who influence? Think about it.
