The Greatest of All is Love

Mark 12:28-34  And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

And when Jesus saw that he answered discretely, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Love is the greatest law of all, greater than the law of karma, the law of gravity, the law of nature and even the laws of Moses. Jesus was questioned by one of the scribes in the verses above about which law was the greatest, and he answered excellently stating that the law of love is the greatest.

If you carefully examine the two laws given by Jesus Christ, and the laws, rituals and ordinances in the old testament, you would see that the laws of Jesus is a summary of the other laws, and Scripture confirms that it is greater than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. To exist in harmony and peace in this world, it is important that we, first of all, love God and also love one another.

Ways Through Which We Can Love God

1. Obey Him

Obedience is a way to express our love for God. You can’t claim to love God if you do not listen to him and obey his instructions. Obedience is a sign of love!

1 John 2:3-5  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

2. Love others

Every human was made in God’s image, and hence, is an extension of God. So, when we love other people, it is also a way of expressing our love for God. Love for others is a sign of love for God!

1 John 4:12  No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Ways to Express Love to Others

1. Pray for them

This is a way to show true love for others. Carry their burdens, intercede for them, pray for their salvation, academics, and finance.

Galatians 6:2  Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

2. Give to others

Give your time, gifts, attention, smile, etc.

3. Check up on them

A phone call, text message, or visitation can go a long way than you ever thought.

1 Corinthians 13:13 ESV: So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
