Why You Should Always Take Naps

What do you do after school in the afternoon? See a movie? Visit a friend? Take a walk down the street? Have you ever thought about taking a nap after the stressful day at work? Or do you have the mentality that an afternoon sleep is a waste of time since you would still sleep at night? Well, let me tell you that taking a nap after school, a stressful day at work or any activity can do you a lot of good than you ever imagined. At times, naps can be seen as a form of laziness but the quote all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” can be rephrased to mean “all work and no sleep makes the head dull!” Because sleeping is an important aspect of life and it goes a long way in keeping the brain fit and running.

Now, why should I take a nap since I would still have my night rest?

What is a Nap?

A nap is a short period of sleep taken during the day.

Studies have found out that taking a 20 minutes nap everyday helps in a lot of ways than just sleeping at night without an afternoon nap. According to Dr. Mednick, the perfect nap for everyone is 90 minutes long and taken between 1 and 3 in the afternoon.

However, this does not mean you cannot have a nap later than that time because of your personal schedule.

Some of the benefits of napping include:

1. Makes the brain alert

Oh yes! Taking a short nap helps the brain to be alert, as studies have found that a 40-minute nap increases alertness by 100%. At times, whenever I’m working and I sense that I’m already tired and no longer productive, rather than force my brain to work, I go on and take a nap, rest my brain and then wake up with a refreshed mind and alert brain.

2. Helps you work better at night

At times, as students, we may have an assignment to finish, a test to read for, and an essay to complete all in one night. However, when this happens, taking a nap in the afternoon can help you stay awake and be productive at night than when you don’t.

3. It helps save money

Yeah, lol, this is in a way related to the previous point. Instead of buying coffee to stay awake at night to work, taking a nap during the day is a natural and effective way to do that.

4. Increases memory retention

Taking a nap helps to retain information in the brain. As a student, taking a nap can help you retain what you have read. “Napping also improves your memory retention; during sleep, recent memories are transferred to the neocortex, where long-term memories are solidified and stored.”– source: Google.

5. It makes you feel relaxed and refreshed

Whenever I am in school, I always plan to take a nap whenever I get home after class. Why? It helps me feel relaxed, refreshed and regain strength for other tasks ahead that day. Taking a nap helps to revitalize and makes one more productive for the rest of the day.

6. It is a good way to unplug from the activities of the day

In one of our posts, “Habits that set successful people apart”, one of these habits is to unplug and one of the best ways to do that is to nap.
