Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered, You will never grow.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Did you know that just because you’re breathing doesn’t mean you’re living? A sad truth but most people only exist and do not live. Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing in the world, most people just exist”.
Radostina Alexandrova when asked what it means to live said “In my opinion ‘living’ means to dream, to love, to enjoy arts, to have projects (not only in the field of science) and to work hard on their implementation. To live means to be active, to have a position. To live means, every day, to learn something new, to help someone, to do something good. To live means to be ready to change- ourselves and the world around us.”
Many people focus on existing, they abide by the same boring routine day after day no spontaneity.
Do you ever just go through a day and feel like everything has been decided like there can be no new choices and nothing new? Well, that’s okay, but when every day feels like this that’s when there’s a problem, when a person only drifts through life aimlessly, full of worry for the future.
But then, there are those who get up excited about the new day, who have things to look forward to and who spend more time enjoying the present rather than worrying about the future.
Living is much more complex than existing, although they are very similar. Living is happiness, it’s living your life wonderfully and happily while doing the things you love surrounded by the people and things you love. To look back years from now and be certain you actually lived a good life. Existing is just being alive, a default setting, that’s all.
Living > Existing.
Someone who exists is controlled by their emotions, mostly fear and anger. They let these emotions control them and dictate what they can and can’t do. Someone who is living understands and controls these emotions rather than be controlled by them.
Living is more than just working a job and receiving a paycheck, it is loving it, following your passion. It is not letting your fears control you into not taking actions, it is not staying in a toxic relationship because you’re scared of what happens when you let that person go, it is moving out of your comfort zone rather than following the same boring routine every day even though you hate it. It is taking a chance to improve your life.
If you knew the world was ending today, would you still do the things you’re planning to do?
Asking yourself this question is a good starting point for figuring out if you’re just settling for mediocrity. If your actions are not making you happy in any area of your life then it’s definitely time to make a change.
You continually have to find something that is meaningful for you and makes you happy otherwise you’ll stop waking up because you want to but because you have to.
Get out of the loop of waking up, getting dressed going to work, coming home, eat, doing chores, going to bed and repeat. Be spontaneous, travel, meet new people, make new friends fall in love, enjoy art, try new things, do things you actually want to do, the interesting ones that make your heart jump. We either live with an intention or exist by default.
It might be a scary process but the fullest life is one that is lived not the one that has merely existed. Don’t just exist, let’s make sure we live too.
Today, ask yourself, am I living or just existing?
