How to Properly Manage Your Time to Ensure Productivity

Recently, I noticed that I have been encumbered with so many activities, to the point that I was no longer productive. Just going from one place to the other, without really achieving anything tangible. I noticed this, and I knew I had to start doing things differently.

Time management is a must have skill, for anyone who wants to be productive in life. It is very easy to be swayed by mere activity and lose sight of productivity.

Yes, one can engage in so many activities and at the end of the day, there is no productivity achieved.

As a teenager, so many things yearn for your attention: family, friends, social media, school work, hobbies, etc. And in all these, if one’s time is not properly managed, there would be a whole lot of lagging behind in important tasks.

How then can one properly manage time, without getting too stressed up with activity whilst still having time to rest and refresh? Below are some ways:

1. Own Your Time; Own Your Life

To properly manage your time, and be truly productive, you have to start owning your time. Don’t let others dictate to you, what you should use your time to do. Now, as teenagers, it is normal that you have responsibilities to carry out at home, for your parents and all.

However, you can still own your time by doing your duties on time. And when they see that you are busy with other meaningful things later on, they would not intrude into your schedule.

2. Know Your Most Productive Time of the Day

This is also very important to being productive. You have to know when you are at your most productive, during a day. For some people, they are most active and productive in the morning, for others it is at night, and for others, it is midday.

This would guide you, so that you would know when to do what; doing the most strenuous activities when you have the most energy and motivation to perform well.

3. Have a To-Do List

Yeah, this point cannot be over flogged. To-do lists helps you to stay focused and do what is necessary at the right time. When writing to-do lists, you could also create time blocks for each activity, in order to be properly guided.

4. Prioritize

Not every thing is important, and even when it is important, it may not be urgent. To start prioritizing, schedule your activities into four categories of:

  • Important and Urgent
  • Important and Not Urgent
  • Not Important and Urgent
  • Not Important and Not Urgent

This would help you see things from a different perspective, and know what to focus on, at a specific time.

Not every thing is important, and even when it is important, it may not be urgent.

5. Avoid Distractions

Distractions are all around, especially on your phone. To properly manage your time and be well productive, you need to cure your phone craze and avoid distractions. One technique I have adopted recently is to put my phone on Airplane mode immediately I wake up, to help me focus on my key activities in the morning.

6. Wake Up Early

This is very key in being productive. Early to bed, early to rise! As a teenager, you need to cultivate an habit of waking up early to start your day. This would not only help you to be productive, it would also help you to be disciplined with sleep. Sleep early, and wake up early.

7. Schedule Your Rest Time

To properly manage your time and be productive, you need to have a rest time scheduled into your to-do list. Yes, it is that important. Taking your rest after a load of activities, help you to take off stress and be reenergized for other activities of the day. Naps perform miracles!

Time is a currency, that if not managed well, could lead you into the bankruptcy of productivity and a fulfilled life. Be time conscious, be productive!

  1. I don’t know why but waking up early really does change the shape of my day, same amount of sleeping hours considered. There’s just a magic to waking up early, so I’d much prefer that to sleeping in a couple of hours and having an unproductive day. Thanks for sharing!
