How to Stop Living in Fear

The English dictionary defines fear as a strong, uncontrollable, unpleasant emotion caused by actual, induced or perceived danger or threat. Going by this definition, a good number of teenagers have been held down by fear at a time or the other. In most cases, you may get to hear ‘fear’ in synonymous names as panic, fright, trepidation, trembling and all. Fear remains fear inspite of these synonyms.

The effect of fear is complete powerlessness. However, if you work on overcoming your fears, it boosts your strength and courage, being the opposite of fear. The question then is, “how do I overcome my fear?”

As a growing teenager, I had fears almost every day of my life. But then, I read somewhere someday, that the command phrase “fear not” appears 365 times in the Bible. Then and there, I resolved to take the following practical steps and gladly, they have worked for me.

1. Name your fear and face it head-on without avoiding it or running away

For instance, if you have the “fear of tomorrow or the future”, you may just need to carefully select a good career with proper guidance to overcome that fear. You may ask your mentor or parent to help you if you’re blank due to the fear. At Teens Meet Online, we have wonderful teen coaches who would be glad to help out. By facing your fear, you’re confessing the positive promise in 2nd Timothy 1:7- “KJV: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

2. Tag and label your fear to reduce its ambiguity

If your fear is vague, it could seem confusing to you. Very similar to the first step above, you may write out this fear on a sticky note and define it, attaching it to your bedside. Carefully, you may daily need to confess that you shall overcome such fear. It could be the fear of failure and so, you define failure in clear dictionary terms and put a notice that you would overcome it. You then work towards taking practical steps such as reading diligently for an exam or preparing properly. Your fear may also be- “I am afraid of being in a relationship because I think I will be abandoned.” While you tag this fear and label it, consciously choose to select your relationships on priority and true love. It would help.

3. Pray over it

There’s totally little we can do as concerns fear. Psychology has tried in futility to deal with this matter. I have resolved that as much as it is an emotional and personality matter, it is highly spiritual too. You cannot choose to avoid the fear because it keeps you hostage still. So, prayer remains a bold step towards overcoming fear. We have a father who listens and always hears us when we pray.

Conclusively, it is of a truth that we have many fears and may get afraid subsequently too. The rule should be that fear doesn’t run you over. You would be fine, I promise.

  1. Nice, lovely. Fear has become a norm in the society which is not supposed to be. Our attitude to our fears should be to simply “face it.”
For me, how do I face my fears? I tell myself “you just have to do this” (If its something that needs doing) Let me add after I must have ran away and avoided it tho.
