Demand The Best From Yourself

How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself and in no instance bypass the discriminations of reason?

This is a question that you should answer as a teenager. You want the best for yourself. You think of the cars you want to buy, the jobs you want, awards, talents you have, and all of that. That’s good. But when would you start demanding the action from yourself? Would you sit back and wait for time to pass? All that makes or breaks your teenage years is your will-to-do.

Be committed to bringing out your best. Do not give a reason to procrastinate a task. No excuse you give is perfect and no excuse is action. So, if you want the best from yourself, be ready to act.

You have been given the principles that you ought to endorse, and you have endorsed them.

What do you need to succeed? The right mindset? Consistency? Hard work? Patience? Obstacles? You have them at your fingertips. A friend once told me, anytime you procrastinate, there’s a still voice begging you to put in the work. Over time, it grows silent. It abdicates its control to vicious and bad habits. Don’t lose your hold. Don’t endorse bad habits. Endorse the right ones. The right habits are simple but endorsing them won’t be easy. Pay the price.

What kind of teacher, then, are you still waiting for in order to refer your self-improvement to him?

Do you need a mentor? Or is it a guide to walk with you every step of the way? You need them but don’t allow their absence to be an excuse. Start. Make mistakes. You don’t need a physical guide. You have the internet. You have social media at your call. Oh, get books. Develop yourself. As Socrates put it, “Gnothi seauton” which means Man, know thyself. Learn at your pace.

You are no longer a boy, but a full-grown man. If you are careless and lazy now and keep putting things off and always deferring the day after which you will attend to yourself, you will not notice that you are making no progress, but you will live and die as someone quite ordinary.

The battle to be extraordinary is one we all fight. We all want to impact lives, make ourselves happy and more importantly, we don’t want to disappear from history after we all die. So, remember when the sun sets each day, you are one day short of the grave. Do what needs to be done to get to where you want to belong and who you want to become. Grow up, teenager. There’s never enough time, so spend it wisely.

From now on, then, resolve to live as a grown-up who is making progress, and make whatever you think best a law that you never set aside. And whenever you encounter anything that is difficult or pleasurable, or highly or lowly regarded, remember that the contest is now: you are at the Olympic Games, you cannot wait any longer, and that your progress is wrecked or preserved by a single day and a single event.

You are on the stage. You have auditioned for your role on Earth by running faster than the hundred million sperms that lost. You deserve the role. So act it well. Be hungry to excel. Every day, you must get better microscopically and soon enough, your growth will become macroscopic.

You have a purpose, I do. We all do. Don’t deny the world of your appearance in a scene. Do your best.

That is how Socrates fulfilled himself by attending to nothing except reason in everything he encountered. And you, although you are not yet a Socrates, should live as someone who at least wants to be a Socrates.

You are the best. Keep pushing. Remember, how long will you wait before you demand the best for yourself? What will be your answer?

PS: I stumbled on an amazing quote by Epictetus. It is all in italics. I made a few contributions. Cheers to you demanding the best from yourself this year.🍻
